well, i know that they attributed this song to their friends sister or girlfriend who was a heroin addict and used a black balloon to tie her arm when she drugged herself. then she O.D'd in a pool hence all the people floating.....

allegedly the song is about the lead singer's very good friend who had a girlfriend/wife (i'm unsure of which) who suffered a heroin addiction and who his friend desperately tried to save. she was very withdrawn and confided only in the lead singer before even his friend. this is how she and he became so close. the title "black balloon" stems from a reference to the most popular means by which people used to tie their arms off years ago in the 20's and 30's to bang up drugs.

eventually the girl overdosed at a very young age and killed herself. whether it was accidental or intentional i am unsure. her death was very devastating to the lead singer and impacted him greatly, hence the creation of the song.
